#thekarigartrail

This month, our KARIGAR design partner Jolin had to make a quick trip to India to start work on a new collection for an international client. While there she also decided to visit a new village in the mountains to see if we could use the skills of their artisans. Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, we (Kanak and Sindhu) were busy finalizing applications and logistics for Maison et Objet in Paris, ShowUP in the Netherlands and Dutch Design Week, also in the Netherlands. Since we couldn’t be with Jolijn in person, we found another way to see how she was doing all by herself in India – through her video blogs (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4xlG_aMshC9gkM4iE3kiBg/videos).

Jolijn’s experiences with the dyeing unit, road tripping with the guys, enjoying her chai, mulling over her colour cards or spending time understanding a new weaving technique has been documented by her through these short, candid videos. Pashm’s collaboration with IXXcreates has meant even greater possibilities to create and execute innovative design. Not only do we have access to a wide variety of artisans or karigars, but we also have huge possibilities when it comes to finding a modern interpretation to traditional weaving and embroidery techniques. And as the sun sets in the mountains of the Himalayas, a weaver in a small village is going home after creating a beautiful KARIGAR product.
